The construction of Fort McMurray International Airport was constrained by building in a remote location with a limited skilled labor force and seasonal temperatures ranging between -50 and +35C. Lighting, seamlessly integrated with the prairies inspired architecture, flows in an uninterrupted pattern throughout the building from the 30' high arrivals hall to the 12' high departure gates, enhancing the character of the building. Designed to surprise and delight travellers, Northern Lights dance across a 100' long feature metal screen of the arrival's hall for 5 minutes at the top of every evening hour reducing the stress of travel for commuters.
In addition to satisfying the significant functional requirements, the achieved Lighting Power Density totals a mere 0.26 w/sq ft, only 30% of the stringent Energy Code limit, minimizing carbon imprint and operational costs.
